I check my watch. It’s just now four pm. Now technically, most days I will be here until at least seven or eight o’clock, but the working day officially ends at five, and I have a feeling that Christian is going to come looking for my answer at five – I can’t see him wanting to wait any longer than that even though waiting at all was his idea not mine. The trouble is, I’m no closer to making the decision than I was when I sat down and made my pros and cons lists. I should have just stuck to the no I gave Christian in his office, but I did promise him that I would think about it and so I have. A fat lot of good that has done me though. Whichever way I find myself leaning, I berate myself and tell myself not to rush into anything, and then I end up leaning the other way. Back and forth, back and forth, a lone ship on a rough sea. Honestly, I’m starting to feel sea sick thinking about this, like I really am being thrown first one way and then the other.

When I lean towards yes, I remind myself that the whole thing is a ridiculous scenario and I couldn’t possibly give Christian a year of my life. And then I lean towards no and I ask myself if Christian is really so bad that I can’t spend the odd date night with him here and there in exchange for more money than I could ever imagine having in one go.

I know what I need to do. I need to talk through the decision with someone. But who? Naturally my mind goes to Sophie as my best friend, but will she have any more clue about whether or not this is a good idea than I have? It’s not like it’s ever happened to her or anyone else we know. But that’s the thing. It hasn’t happened to anyone I know, so Sophie is as good as anyone else for advice on this.

I grab my cell phone and get up from my desk. I think about grabbing my pros and cons list from my drawer, but the truth is I don’t need it; I know it word for word. I make my way to the kitchen at the far end of the floor, the one that’s usually deserted at this time of the day. I’m not disappointed. I slip in, grab myself a bottle of water, and sit down at the table.

I crack open the bottle and sip the water and then I call Sophie.

“Don’t tell me. You acted like a school girl and he laughed at you and broke your heart into a thousand pieces so you quit on the spot,” Sophie says as she takes my call.

“Not exactly,” I laugh.

“But something has happened, hasn’t it?” she asks.

“Yeah. That’s an understatement. You’re not going to believe this but Christian has basically asked me to pretend to be his girlfriend for a year,” I say.
